Ishan Kishan Eyes Suryakumar Yadav’s Record as India Begin New Zealand T20I Series
Ishan Kishan is closing in on Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian T20I record and Mohammad Rizwan’s calendar-year milestone as India begin their New Zealand T20I series in Christchurch on October 22.
Kishan has been in excellent form recently, including a strong performance in the recently concluded West Indies series. He will now aim to carry that momentum into the New Zealand series and move closer to several significant milestones in T20 International cricket.
Ishan Kishan Can Break Suryakumar Yadav’s Record
Kishan could create history in Thursday’s match in Christchurch by becoming the Indian batter with the most T20 International runs in a calendar year. He is just seven runs away from surpassing Suryakumar Yadav’s record.
Suryakumar scored 1,164 runs in T20 Internationals in 2022. Kishan, meanwhile, has accumulated 1,158 runs in 34 innings so far this year. He has maintained an average of 37.35 and an impressive strike rate of 172.06, including one century and seven half-centuries.
A strong performance in the opening match against New Zealand would be enough for Kishan to surpass Suryakumar’s tally and establish a new Indian record for the most T20 International runs in a calendar year.
How Far Is Ishan Kishan From Mohammad Rizwan’s Record?
Kishan is also closing in on another major milestone in international cricket. The record for the most T20 International runs scored by a batter from a Full Member team in a calendar year currently belongs to Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan.
Rizwan scored 1,326 runs in 2021. Kishan needs another 139 runs to surpass that tally. If he continues his strong batting performances throughout the matches against New Zealand, he could also challenge Rizwan’s record.
His performance in the upcoming series will therefore be crucial as he attempts to move beyond the existing benchmarks in T20 International cricket.
Ishan Kishan Closing In on 2,000 T20 Runs in a Calendar Year
Beyond international cricket, Kishan has also been prolific across T20 matches this year. He has scored 1,760 runs in 49 T20 matches, maintaining an average of 38.26 and a strike rate of more than 175.
He is now just 240 runs away from becoming the first Indian batter to score 2,000 runs in T20 cricket in a single calendar year.
So far, only West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran and Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan have achieved this milestone worldwide. Pooran scored 2,331 runs in T20 cricket in 2024, while Rizwan accumulated 2,036 runs in 2021.
With multiple records within reach, Kishan will enter the New Zealand series with significant milestones to target. The opening T20 International in Christchurch on October 22 will provide his first opportunity to surpass Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian record and begin his pursuit of the other landmarks.
