Mumbai ICT Student Siddhesh Patil Found Dead in Hostel Room, Police Probe Underway
A second-year Chemical Engineering student, Siddhesh Patil, was found dead in his hostel room at Mumbai’s ICT Matunga campus. Reports indicate he had contacted a doctor hours earlier, as police investigate the circumstances.
Police reached the spot after receiving information, took custody of the body and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators are examining the possible reasons behind the student’s death. Given the sensitivity of the case, Mumbai Police is scheduled to hold a press conference at 5:30 pm to share official information.
According to reports in other media outlets, Patil had reportedly been struggling with depression for a long time. He had allegedly messaged a doctor just a few hours before the incident, informing the doctor that he was experiencing suicidal thoughts. After receiving this information from the doctor, his parents left for the hostel, where they reportedly found their son dead.
The incident has renewed concerns about mental health support and institutional systems on university campuses. It comes at a time when protests by students have continued at neighbouring IIT Bombay following the death of a second-year student there.
The successive incidents have once again raised serious questions about academic stress, students’ mental health and institutional accountability at the country’s leading technical institutions.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances in which Siddhesh Patil allegedly took the extreme step. Whether he was facing mental health challenges, academic pressure or other difficulties remains unclear. Further details are expected to emerge following the police investigation and the scheduled press conference.
