Marco Rubio Visits Reliance’s Jamnagar Refinery as US Eyes India’s Energy Capacity
Marco Rubio visited Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery, Vantara and green energy hub as the US seeks greater energy cooperation with India amid diesel prices reaching $6.28 per gallon and ongoing trade deal negotiations.
Mukesh Ambani and Reliance Industries Executive Director Anant Ambani welcomed Rubio and Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador to India. Rubio was accompanied by his wife, Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio.
The visitors toured the world’s largest refinery complex and received information about its advanced technology, enormous processing capacity and integrated operations. They were also briefed on Reliance’s new energy gigafactories and data centres currently under construction.
Energy Supply, Investment and Supply Chains Discussed
During the visit, discussions covered investment in energy and digital infrastructure, affordable and reliable energy supplies, advanced technology and resilient supply chains. Mukesh Ambani and Anant Ambani outlined their long-term vision of developing Jamnagar into a hub for deep technology, innovation and advanced manufacturing.
The meeting also explored opportunities for commercial cooperation with American companies across conventional and new energy sectors.
Meanwhile, Akash Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s elder son and Managing Director of Jio Platforms, was overseeing preparations for the company’s initial public offering (IPO).
Rubio Calls India a Refining Powerhouse
A day before arriving in Jamnagar, Rubio described India as a powerhouse in crude oil refining. He also urged India to increase its processing of crude oil arriving from Venezuela.
The United States wants India to refine larger volumes of crude oil originating in the Western Hemisphere and increase its purchases of American energy products.
Reliance’s Jamnagar complex has the capacity to process approximately 1.4 million barrels of crude oil per day. Diesel and other refined products produced at the facility are supplied to markets in India and internationally.
Visit Comes Amid Rising US Diesel Prices
Rubio’s visit to Jamnagar took place amid growing concerns over diesel prices in the United States ahead of the midterm elections. Diesel prices in the country have reached $6.28 per gallon.
Against this backdrop, the United States is seeking to strengthen cooperation with India’s extensive refining sector. The objective is to support large-scale crude oil processing and increase the availability of fuel in international markets.
Washington hopes that greater cooperation in energy trade and refining could help ease pressure on fuel prices.
Reliance Linked to Proposed Texas Refinery
Reliance is also associated with a proposed new refinery in Brownsville, Texas. The project is being developed by US company America First Refining and is planned to have a capacity to process 168,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
The facility is being designed to refine light shale crude produced in the United States. Once completed, it would be the first major new refinery built in the country in nearly five decades.
Reliance has also entered into a long-term agreement to purchase refined products produced at the proposed facility.
Rubio Meets Jaishankar in Mumbai, Trade Deal Also Discussed
Before travelling to Jamnagar, Rubio met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday. The two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation across several areas, including energy, trade, investment, defence and critical technologies.
Efforts are continuing to resolve differences over a trade agreement between India and the United States. Rubio had said that only a few issues remained to be addressed in the negotiations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also made a significant statement about the India-US trade deal. According to Trump, the two countries were very close to reaching an agreement, which would differ from the deal concluded previously.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Reliance Industries’ massive complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, on Wednesday, where Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani and his family welcomed the American delegation. Rubio toured the world’s largest single-site oil refining complex, Vantara wildlife rescue and conservation centre, and Reliance’s new green energy manufacturing hub. The visit came as the United States seeks to expand trade with India. Rubio spent a few hours in Jamnagar before departing for the United States.

Honored to join @SecRubio at @RIL_Updates Jamnagar facilities. Over the past year, India’s imports of U.S. LPG have surged from under 10% to 67%, making the United States India’s largest LPG supplier. Reliance’s planned investment in the first new U.S. oil refinery in 50 years is another major opportunity to expand American energy production and create jobs.
