Drivers from unions including Ahmedabad Rickshaw Chalak Ekta halted operations at key locations across the city, including the airport and ISKCON. The strike led to confrontations at some locations, with police detaining drivers during the disruption.
The strike has also affected public transport demand. By noon, BRTS buses recorded a surge of 21,000 passengers as commuters turned to alternative transport amid the shutdown of auto-rickshaw and taxi services.
The unions involved in the protest claim that the action represents 3 lakh rickshaw drivers and 70,000 taxi drivers. They are seeking action over the impact of ride-hailing applications on drivers’ earnings and opposing the operation of unregulated two-wheeler taxis.
The four-day strike will continue until September 10, leaving commuters to deal with disruptions while drivers press their demands over livelihoods and earnings.
The protest has brought the conflict between traditional auto and taxi drivers, ride-hailing platforms and commuters into sharper focus, with the ongoing strike affecting transportation across Ahmedabad.
