The journalists allege that the police intensified the assault after hearing their surname, “Khan”, and hurled religion-specific abuses during the incident.
Delhi Police, however, has presented a different account. The police said the journalists had obstructed a VVIP route with their scooter and were taken for enquiry under security protocols.
The incident has drawn condemnation from journalist groups and opposition leaders, who have demanded an independent probe into the allegations. They have also called for the preservation of CCTV footage and action against the officers involved.
The conflicting accounts have placed the conduct of the police during the high-security hospital event under scrutiny, with demands for an investigation into what occurred and the circumstances surrounding the journalists’ detention for enquiry.
