India Highlights Scientific Snow Leopard Conservation Advances at Russia Roundtable

India showcased advances in snow leopard conservation at a Russia-India roundtable in Moscow, highlighting population estimation, radio telemetry and genetic analysis while discussing stronger international cooperation.

 

India highlighted its advances in science-based snow leopard conservation, including population estimation, radio telemetry and genetic analysis, at the Russia-India Roundtable Meeting on Snow Leopard Study and Conservation held in Moscow on August 26.

The meeting was organised at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences under a partnership between the Interregional Association ‘Irbis’ and the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA).

The partnership agreement between the two organisations was signed in December 2025 with the objective of strengthening international cooperation in snow leopard research and conservation.

A delegation from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) outlined India’s progress in adopting scientific approaches for snow leopard conservation.

Officials from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) highlighted developments in snow leopard population estimation, radio telemetry and genetic analysis, emphasising the growing importance of scientific tools in monitoring the species and strengthening conservation measures.

The roundtable brought together representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow Zoo, Rosprirodnadzor and experts working on snow leopard research and conservation.

The Indian delegation participated in thematic discussions focusing on ways to advance collaborative approaches to the scientific study and conservation of snow leopards.

The meeting provided a platform for India and its international partners to exchange knowledge, experiences and scientific expertise related to snow leopard monitoring and conservation, strengthening the scope for continued international cooperation in the species’ scientific study and conservation.
