Monsoon Fury Intensifies Across India as IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alerts; Mumbai, Pune Face Severe Disruptions
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several states as the southwest monsoon remains active. Mumbai and Pune continue to face major disruptions due to intense rain, landslides, flooding and transport delays, while authorities issue safety advisories.
Mumbai, which witnessed intense rainfall over the past two days, received temporary relief on Tuesday morning. However, the IMD has retained an Orange Alert for the city, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall along with gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kmph. Schools and colleges in Mumbai remain closed as authorities continue assessing weather conditions and ensuring public safety.
The relentless rainfall has significantly disrupted normal life across Maharashtra. Train services on the Mumbai-Pune route were affected after landslides occurred in the ghat section, causing operational challenges. Several roads across the state witnessed waterlogging and severe traffic congestion, while rescue and restoration operations continue in affected areas.
Pune has also remained under close watch after heavy rainfall claimed multiple lives over the past two days. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for the district, while schools and colleges have been closed following incidents of landslides, flooding and wall collapses caused by continuous rainfall. Authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance amid the ongoing weather conditions.
The weather department has further warned of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several northern, western and southern states over the next 24 hours. A low-pressure system linked to the active monsoon is expected to sustain intense rainfall activity across large parts of the country.
Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flooded roads, weak structures and landslide-prone areas, and strictly follow official weather advisories. With heavy rainfall expected to continue across multiple regions, the ongoing monsoon spell remains a major challenge for administration and emergency response agencies.
