India’s Mobile Internet Costs Plunge Over 97% in a Decade as Digital Connectivity Reaches Unprecedented Scale
India’s mobile internet costs have fallen by more than 97% over the past decade, driving an unprecedented surge in digital connectivity. Internet connections have crossed 105 crore, broadband usage has expanded nearly seventeen-fold, 5G now covers 99.6% of districts, and mobile phone exports have reached record levels, reflecting India’s rapid digital transformation.
According to New India Samachar, the cost of 1 GB of mobile data dropped to Rs 7.87 in December 2025 from Rs 308 in 2014. During the same period, internet connections surged from 25.5 crore to 105.9 crore, while mobile connections increased from 90 crore to 127.3 crore.
The figures were highlighted in an official government document released to mark 12 years of the Narendra Modi government. According to a PTI report, the document stated that internet connections had reached 103 crore by December 2025, compared to only 25 crore in 2014. It further noted that broadband connections expanded significantly during the period, rising from nearly 6 crore to approximately 100 crore.
New India Samachar reported that affordable data prices have been particularly instrumental in boosting internet consumption in rural areas. The sharp reduction in internet costs has enabled broader digital participation and accelerated connectivity across regions that previously had limited access to online services.
India’s telecommunications infrastructure has also undergone substantial expansion over the past decade. According to New India Samachar, the country recorded 105.9 crore internet connections by December 2025, more than four times the level recorded in 2014. The widespread adoption of smartphones, improved mobile network coverage, and significantly lower internet costs have been identified as major factors behind the surge in internet usage.
The report stated that 5G services are now available in 99.6% of districts across the country. To strengthen connectivity infrastructure, more than 7.22 lakh kilometers of optical fiber cable have been laid nationwide, creating a stronger foundation for digital communication and high-speed internet access.
According to the report, India has emerged as the world’s second-largest country in terms of both mobile network deployment and the number of internet users. The government document reviewed by PTI further stated that broadband connections increased nearly seventeen-fold, rising from around 6 crore in 2014 to approximately 100 crore by 2025.
The growth extends beyond connectivity. PTI reported that mobile phone exports climbed sharply from Rs 1,600 crore in 2014 to Rs 2.6 lakh crore by 2025, reflecting the rapid expansion of India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
The government document also stated that Aadhaar enrolments crossed 144 crore, up from 61.01 crore in 2014. In addition, twelve semiconductor manufacturing facilities have received approval, compared to none in 2014, highlighting the country’s growing focus on advanced technology manufacturing.
The data underscores the scale of India’s digital transformation over the past decade. With internet costs reaching historic lows, broadband penetration expanding rapidly, 5G services covering nearly the entire country, and technology manufacturing gaining momentum, India’s digital ecosystem has evolved into one of the largest and fastest-growing in the world.
