Police sources said Sahil also mentioned that he had not prepared well for the examination, which was why he had taken the step. Investigators are examining the written statement in detail as part of their efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to police sources, Sahil spoke to a female friend shortly after he was caught allegedly cheating. During the conversation, he reportedly told her that his Thermodynamics Theory paper had not gone well and that he was worried because he wanted to secure good marks. He also reportedly informed her that he had been caught cheating during the examination.
The details of the written statement and the conversation with his friend could prove significant in the ongoing investigation, as police seek to establish the sequence of events leading up to his death.
Sahil Wakode, a 22-year-old student at IIT Bombay, died on September 18, 2026. His death has since raised several questions, including those concerning student safety, academic pressure and alleged caste discrimination at one of India's most prestigious educational institutions. The incident reportedly began with allegations involving the use of a mobile phone and ChatGPT during an examination.
Sahil's parents have accused Professor Suryanarayan Dulla of harassing their son on the basis of caste. Following the allegations, students staged protests on the campus. The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has begun investigating the case to determine the circumstances surrounding Sahil's death and examine the allegations made by his family.
IIT Bombay has also constituted a 10-member committee to investigate the matter and sent Professor Suryanarayan Dulla on leave. These developments have brought further attention to the questions surrounding the incident and the allegations that remain under investigation.
Police are currently seeking answers to several key questions. Investigators are examining what exactly happened inside the examination hall and the nature of the conversation between Sahil and the professor. They are also trying to establish Sahil's mental and emotional state after the examination and determine whether any other incident involving him occurred on campus.
Another key aspect of the investigation is the allegations of caste discrimination made by Sahil's family. Police are examining what evidence, if any, supports these allegations. Investigators are analysing CCTV footage, digital evidence and witness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events.
As the investigation continues, Sahil's written statement, his reported conversation with his friend and the evidence collected from the campus remain important elements in establishing the circumstances surrounding his death. The police investigation and IIT Bombay's committee inquiry are expected to address the unanswered questions surrounding the case, including the examination incident and the allegations raised by his family.
