The decision was deferred during the committee’s meeting held in Hyderabad on Friday, which was attended by Irrigation officials from both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The committee had also deferred the matter during its previous meeting on August 24 after the two states failed to reach a consensus on water sharing.
During Friday’s meeting, the Telangana government proposed sharing Krishna water on a 50:50 basis. The Andhra Pradesh government objected to the proposal and instead sought a 66 percent share of the water for Andhra Pradesh and 34 percent for Telangana. Telangana officials objected to the 66:34 proposal submitted by Andhra Pradesh.
Sources said officials from both states also levelled allegations against each other over the utilisation of Krishna water. Andhra Pradesh alleged that the Telangana government was utilising water from the Nagarjuna Sagar project for power generation, while Telangana alleged that Andhra Pradesh was illegally withdrawing water from the Pothireddypady project.
The Andhra Pradesh government urged the KRMB to direct the Telangana government to stop power generation immediately.
Speaking to reporters, Telangana Irrigation officials said they had demanded an allocation of 200 TMC of water for Telangana due to the prevailing El-Nino conditions. They also made it clear that they had objected to the 66:34 sharing formula proposed by Andhra Pradesh.
The Telangana officials said the Andhra Pradesh government had been repeatedly proposing the same 66:34 percentage of sharing for the last three years despite objections from the Telangana government. With both states maintaining their opposing positions, the KRMB has once again deferred a decision on the proposed Krishna water sharing for drinking purposes
