India Summons Iranian Diplomats After Indian Sailor Dies in Gulf of Oman Tanker Missile Attack
India summons Iranian diplomats after missile attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman killed an Indian sailor and injured several others. The Ministry of External Affairs raises concerns over maritime security, regional tensions, and the safety of Indian citizens amid escalating West Asia conflicts.
According to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Defence, two oil tankers named Mombasa and Al Bahiyah were travelling through Omani waters when they were targeted by two Iranian cruise missiles. The attack resulted in the death of an Indian sailor deployed on the Mombasa tanker, while a total of eight people, including six Indians, were injured. Four of the injured individuals were reported to be in critical condition. Following the missile strikes, both tankers caught fire, but the crew members managed to bring the flames under control in time.
According to news agency ANI, hours after the attack, the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi summoned the Iranian diplomat and conveyed India’s strong displeasure. Officials made it clear that targeting commercial vessels on international maritime routes is a matter of grave concern and could have serious implications for regional security.
The UAE also strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a serious violation of international law. The UAE government stated that it reserves the right to take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, citizens, and maritime interests.
The development comes two days after a crew member of an Indian nationality went missing following an attack on a Cyprus-flagged container ship. Amid continuously rising tensions in West Asia, India has reiterated its appeal to all parties to exercise restraint and seek solutions through dialogue. The Indian government is also maintaining constant oversight of the safety and security of Indian citizens and sailors present in the region.
The attacks on commercial vessels in a strategically important maritime corridor have raised significant concerns over international shipping safety and regional stability. India’s diplomatic response highlights its growing focus on protecting the interests and security of its citizens engaged in global maritime operations.
