IMD Issues Heavy Rain, Thunderstorm and Strong Wind Alert Across 18 States for July 12 as Active Monsoon Intensifies
The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, lightning and strong wind alert for 18 states on July 12. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are expected to witness severe weather as the active southwest monsoon continues to affect normal life across the country.
Delhi is expected to witness cloudy skies throughout the day, with heavy rainfall likely in several areas. Strong winds with speeds ranging between 65 and 70 kilometres per hour are also forecast. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to remain around 28 degrees Celsius.
In Uttar Pradesh, the IMD has issued a heavy rainfall and strong wind alert for several districts, including Meerut, Agra, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Bahraich and Lucknow. The state capital, Lucknow, is expected to record a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius.
Bihar is also likely to experience intense weather conditions. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds with speeds of 60 to 70 kilometres per hour have been forecast for Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Purnia, Katihar and several other districts.
In Jharkhand, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Ranchi, Deoghar, Dumka, Bokaro, Giridih and adjoining districts. Wind speeds in these areas may reach 55 to 65 kilometres per hour.
The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall alert for several districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal, Indore, Damoh, Raisen, Mandla and Gwalior. In West Bengal, Kolkata, Howrah, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and the North and South 24 Parganas districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds of 60 to 70 kilometres per hour.
The hill states are also likely to face severe weather conditions. Heavy rainfall has been forecast for Nainital, Haridwar, Chamoli, Pithoragarh and Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand, where Dehradun is expected to record a maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. In Himachal Pradesh, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla and Solan are likely to receive heavy rainfall, while strong winds of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour are expected to affect several parts of the state.
The weather department has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions. The combination of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and high-speed winds could increase the risk of waterlogging in the plains and landslides in hilly regions, making precautionary measures essential as the active monsoon continues to impact large parts of the country.
