Despite the suspension, Cricket Canada’s ongoing cricket programmes, including national team activities and high-performance operations, are not expected to face immediate disruption.
Financial disclosures for the year ending 2024 indicate that ICC distributions accounted for nearly 63 percent of Cricket Canada’s total revenue. Out of a total income of CAD 5.7 million, approximately CAD 3.6 million was received directly from ICC financial support, underscoring the scale of dependency on the global governing body.
The ICC has not publicly specified the exact governance issues that led to the suspension. However, recent reporting by the Canadian investigative programme Fifth Estate has alleged multiple breaches involving governance standards, financial oversight mechanisms, and administrative functioning within the Cricket Canada board.
The funding suspension comes at a turbulent time for Cricket Canada, which has been facing a series of controversies over the past year. One of the key ongoing matters involves an investigation into Canada’s match against the New Zealand national cricket team during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which is currently under review by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit.
In a separate controversy, former Canada head coach Khurram Chohan is reported to have made allegations in a leaked audio recording, claiming that senior board officials exerted pressure to influence national team selections. The same recording reportedly also contained claims linked to attempted match corruption.
Responding to the broader integrity concerns, Andrew Ephgrave, interim head of the ICC Anti-Integrity Unit, previously stated that governance matters involving ICC members are addressed under the council’s jurisdiction in accordance with established constitutional procedures.
The suspension follows Cricket Canada’s annual general meeting held on May 9 and 10, during which the board announced a series of reforms described as part of an ongoing governance transformation initiative. A newly elected nine-member board of directors was also confirmed during the meeting, marking a structural shift amid heightened scrutiny.
The ICC’s decision places Cricket Canada under intensified financial and administrative pressure at a critical juncture, as multiple investigations and governance challenges continue to test the stability of the organisation and its international standing.
