The incident involved Deep Singh, a probationary sub-inspector posted at a Special Operations Group camp in the Kandi area of the north Kashmir district. According to officials, Singh was involved in a quarrel with his wife, Bhawana, late on Friday night.
During the altercation, Singh allegedly opened fire on his wife, killing her instantly at the scene. Immediately after the shooting, he turned the weapon on himself in an apparent suicide attempt, leaving him critically injured.
The injured officer was rushed for urgent medical care and is currently undergoing treatment at SKIMS hospital in Srinagar, where his condition remains serious, officials stated.
Authorities have confirmed the sequence of events and said that further investigation into the incident is underway to establish the precise circumstances that led to the fatal shooting and subsequent suicide attempt.
The incident has raised serious concerns within security and administrative circles, given the involvement of a serving police personnel posted at an operational unit in a sensitive region.
