Hardik Pandya Remains Sidelined With Back Spasm as Mumbai Indians Await Captain’s Return Amid Injury Concerns
Hardik Pandya remains sidelined due to a back spasm, missing multiple IPL 2026 matches for Mumbai Indians. Shardul Thakur confirms injury-related absence and hints at a possible return against Kolkata Knight Riders. The captain’s form struggles and fitness concerns add to MI’s disappointing eliminated campaign this season.
Pandya first missed Mumbai Indians’ home fixture against Lucknow Super Giants on May 4. He subsequently did not feature in the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on May 10, despite travelling with the squad. He also did not travel to Dharamsala for Mumbai Indians’ six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings, a match in which Jasprit Bumrah assumed captaincy duties for the third time this season after Suryakumar Yadav was unavailable due to the birth of his child. In Pandya’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav had earlier led the side.
Mumbai Indians all-rounder Shardul Thakur provided an official update on the situation, confirming that Pandya’s absence is injury-related. He also indicated a potential return for the captain in the upcoming clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on May 20. Thakur stated that Pandya has been training in Mumbai and expressed confidence in his return, adding that players of his quality are deeply missed by the team.
Pandya’s current season has been underwhelming for both player and captain. Mumbai Indians have already been eliminated from IPL 2026, with his form being cited among the contributing factors to the team’s disappointing campaign. In eight innings, he has scored 146 runs at an average of 20.85 and a strike rate of 136.44, with a highest score of 40. With the ball, he has taken four wickets at an average of 61.50 and an economy rate close to 11.90 across 20.4 overs.
As the franchise navigates a challenging season, Pandya’s recovery and potential return remain closely watched, with his availability seen as crucial to restoring balance and leadership within the squad.
