The decision takes effect from journeys commencing April 28, 2026, formalising what was initially introduced as a temporary augmentation. The Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Vande Bharat was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 12, 2024, and began commercial operations on March 13, 2024. It is the 42nd Vande Bharat Express and part of the 162 such services currently operational across the country.
Train numbers 22961 and 22962, operating between Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central, were originally introduced with a 16-coach configuration. However, amid rising passenger traffic, four additional coaches were added on an experimental basis in January 2026, temporarily increasing the train’s capacity to 20 coaches. The arrangement was extended through March and April due to consistently high demand.
The expansion has now been made permanent. Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, confirmed that the temporary augmentation, which was previously notified up to journeys beginning April 27, 2026, will continue indefinitely. He stated that the additional coaches comprise four air-conditioned Chair Car units.
With the inclusion of these four Chair Car coaches, the train’s passenger capacity has increased significantly. Officials confirmed that the upgrade adds seating for 278 additional passengers, providing relief on a route that has experienced growing demand for faster, premium rail connectivity. The move is expected to improve seat availability while accommodating increasing ridership between two of western India’s key commercial centres.
The Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Vande Bharat covers a distance of 491 kilometres in 5 hours and 40 minutes, making it one of the fastest rail connections between Gujarat and Maharashtra. The train operates six days a week, running daily except Sunday, and is designed to cater to both business and leisure travellers seeking efficient intercity travel.
During its journey, the train halts at four major stations: Vadodara, Surat, Vapi, and Borivali. These stops serve important urban and commercial hubs, contributing to the route’s consistently strong passenger demand.
The permanent shift from 16 to 20 coaches reflects not only rising occupancy levels but also a broader strategy by Indian Railways to enhance capacity on high-demand Vande Bharat services rather than relying solely on introducing new trains. What began as a temporary measure to address passenger pressure has now evolved into a long-term operational upgrade, underscoring sustained demand on the corridor.
As India continues to expand its semi-high-speed rail network, the Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Vande Bharat stands as a key example of how existing services are being scaled to meet growing travel needs. The 20-coach configuration is expected to deliver improved capacity, better availability, and a stronger premium travel option for passengers on one of the country’s most important routes.
