TRAI releases a consultation paper on public Wi-Fi expansion in India, examining regulatory challenges, global best practices, and deployment trends. Stakeholders are invited to submit comments as the government aims to accelerate nationwide digital connectivity and bridge the digital divide.
According to the Ministry of Communication, the consultation paper provides a comprehensive overview of the public Wi-Fi ecosystem in various countries, drawing key lessons from international experiences and global best practices. It also presents an in-depth assessment of the current status of public Wi-Fi deployment in India, including prevailing deployment trends and evolving demand patterns.
The document further identifies major issues and structural challenges affecting the widespread adoption and growth of public Wi-Fi networks across the country. By addressing these barriers, TRAI aims to create a more enabling environment for accelerated infrastructure development in the sector.
The Ministry confirmed that the consultation paper has been made available on TRAI’s official platform, inviting stakeholders to submit their written comments by the 25th of next month. Counter-comments on the submissions have been scheduled to be accepted until June 8.
