Northern India Scorches Above 40°C as Heatwave Peaks; Relief Expected from Approaching Western Disturbance

Northern and central India face intense heatwave conditions with temperatures crossing 40°C. Delhi-NCR may touch 44°C as authorities issue advisories. Meteorologists predict relief through thunderstorms and rainfall due to an approaching western disturbance, while health experts warn of severe heat-related risks.

New Delhi: Large parts of northern India are reeling under extreme heat, with temperatures crossing severe thresholds and soaring beyond 40 degrees Celsius. Delhi and surrounding regions continue to experience intense conditions, prompting the government to issue advisories urging citizens to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, even as meteorological experts संकेत that relief may soon arrive.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in Delhi-NCR may climb to 44 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to remain around 27 degrees Celsius. Authorities have also warned of strong surface winds during afternoon and evening hours, further intensifying discomfort across the region.

The entire northwest and central belt of the country remains under the grip of a persistent heatwave. However, meteorologist Naresh Kumar stated that the current phase of extreme temperatures is unlikely to last much longer. He explained that an incoming western disturbance is expected to impact northwest India shortly, which could significantly ease prevailing conditions.

“In Delhi-NCR, temperatures have remained between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius over the past two days. From tomorrow, we expect thunderstorm activity and light rainfall in northwest India. This will likely lead to a drop in temperature,” Kumar said, outlining the anticipated weather shift.

In central India, heatwave conditions are expected to continue for one more day, with high temperatures persisting through today and tomorrow. Relief is likely to begin from Wednesday onwards, according to forecasts. Kumar also noted that a second wave of extreme heat is not expected within the next five to six days.

Health authorities have simultaneously raised concerns about the serious risks posed by prolonged exposure to extreme heat. The government advisory lists heatstroke, heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat cramps, heat rash, and food poisoning among the primary health threats. Additionally, rising temperatures increase the likelihood of diseases such as typhoid, chicken pox, and other gastrointestinal infections.

Experts have strongly advised limiting outdoor activity to essential needs, especially during peak hours between 12 pm and 4 pm. Citizens are urged to cover their heads, use umbrellas, and maintain high fluid intake to stay hydrated. Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing is also recommended.

Dr. M Wali, Senior Consultant in Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, emphasized the importance of dietary adjustments during extreme heat. He advised increasing the intake of green vegetables, fruits, and fresh juices to help maintain adequate hydration levels in the body. He also cautioned against consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, and sugary beverages, as these can contribute to dehydration.

Authorities have further warned against leaving children and pets unattended in vehicles, highlighting the rapid rise in internal temperatures that can prove fatal.

As northern and central India endure this phase of intense heat, the anticipated weather system offers a crucial window of relief. The coming days will determine how swiftly conditions stabilize, but for now, caution and preparedness remain essential in the face of the ongoing heatwave.
