16-Year-Old Akshra Dutta from Poonch Breaks Barriers to Enter National Hockey Camp

Akshra Dutta, a 16-year-old hockey player from Poonch near the Line of Control, earns selection in India’s U-18 national camp after a standout performance at the Sub Junior Women National Championship, overcoming social barriers and limited opportunities.

Emerging from the remote border district of Poonch, just eight kilometres from the Line of Control, 16-year-old Akshra Dutta has secured a place in Hockey India’s ongoing Under-18 National Coaching Camp at the Sports Authority of India centre in Bhopal, marking a significant breakthrough for a young athlete from a region with limited sporting opportunities.

Akshra earned her selection following a strong performance at the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2026 Division ‘C’. Representing Hockey Jammu and Kashmir, she scored four field goals and finished as the second-highest goalscorer in her division. Her contribution proved decisive in helping her team top Pool B and secure promotion to Division ‘B’ for the upcoming season.

Her rise is rooted in a deeply embedded sporting culture within her family. Her father, Santosh Kumar Dutta, a professional gymnast, introduced her to sports at an early age and continues to be her primary source of encouragement. Her mother serves as a government school teacher, her grandfather is a retired army personnel, and her sisters are also actively engaged in sports, collectively fostering a disciplined and aspirational environment.

Recalling her early journey, Akshra said she chose hockey at the age of seven when her father took her to a playground and encouraged her to select a sport. Since that moment, she has consistently pursued the game with determination. She credited her father’s unwavering support as a key factor behind her progress.

Playing as a forward, Akshra draws inspiration from former Indian hockey player Vandana Katariya. She recalled watching an international match against Argentina with her father, during which she was encouraged to closely observe Katariya’s gameplay. Since then, she has consistently studied her techniques and aims to emulate her goal-scoring abilities at the international level.

At the national camp, Akshra is training under coach Rani Rampal. Reflecting on the experience, she stated that the training has transformed her understanding of the sport. She emphasized that beyond discipline and confidence, the coaching has instilled the importance of enjoying the game and playing with freedom.

Akshra Dutta’s journey from a border district with limited infrastructure to a national training camp underscores a powerful narrative of perseverance, family support, and determination, highlighting the untapped sporting potential emerging from remote regions of India.
