India Advances AI Ambitions with Google Cloud Hub Launch in Visakhapatnam
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu launched the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, highlighting India’s rapid growth in artificial intelligence, semiconductor production, and electronics manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Vaishnaw said India is entering a phase of large-scale growth in electronics manufacturing, semiconductor production, advanced chip design, and artificial intelligence technologies. He stated that the country is rapidly emerging as a trusted global partner in electronics manufacturing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India initiative. Reflecting on past challenges, he noted that India had previously missed opportunities in electronics manufacturing, semiconductor production, and hardware development, but sustained policy support and decisive political leadership have transformed the sector in recent years. He highlighted that smartphones have become India’s largest exported product, demonstrating the country’s rising strength in global supply chains.
The Minister emphasised that India now possesses the capability to manufacture modules, sub-modules, finished products, components, servers, and advanced electronic equipment with quality and competitive costs. He urged global technology firms, including Google, to expand manufacturing operations in India, particularly in servers, GPU systems, and memory chips, to support the rapidly growing data centre ecosystem.
Highlighting progress in the semiconductor sector, Mr Vaishnaw said commercial production has commenced at two semiconductor plants under the India Semiconductor Mission. He also called for collaborative research efforts to enhance power efficiency and reduce water consumption in future technology infrastructure projects under the India AI Mission.
Describing Visakhapatnam as an emerging hub for artificial intelligence, the Minister said the city is set to gain recognition as “AI Patnam.” He added that the AI Hub will drive advancements across sectors including education, healthcare, aerospace, logistics, and agriculture through advanced artificial intelligence applications. The infrastructure, he noted, will also strengthen digital connectivity between India and regions such as Europe, Africa, Australia, the Middle East, and the United States.
Union Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, Ministers of State Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar and B. Srinivasa Varma, along with state ministers, representatives from Google, Adani Group, and Bharti Airtel, as well as public representatives and industry leaders, were present at the event.
The launch of the Google Cloud India AI Hub signals a major milestone in India’s technological trajectory, reinforcing its ambition to become a global leader in artificial intelligence, semiconductor innovation, and next-generation digital infrastructure.
