Born in September 1982, Gaurav Gogoi is the son of veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi, who served as the Chief Minister of Assam. He completed his schooling at St Columba’s School in Delhi before pursuing a Bachelor of Technology degree from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in 2004. Following a brief professional stint in marketing with Airtel, Gogoi moved to the United States to obtain a master’s degree in Public Administration.
Gogoi entered active politics in 2014, securing a decisive victory from the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency. He defeated Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Mrinal Kumar Saikia by a margin of 93,000 votes. Building on this success, he retained the seat in the 2019 general elections, overcoming Asom Gana Parishad candidate Moni Madhab Mahanta with a significantly increased margin of 209,994 votes.
The Jorhat contest and the accompanying allegations have brought Gogoi into sharp political focus, underscoring the intensity of electoral competition in Assam.
