S.L. Raheja Hospital Marks 45 Years with Launch of Advanced Histopathology Department and Robotic Orthopaedic Surgery System
S.L. Raheja Hospital, Mumbai, marks 45 years of healthcare excellence with the launch of an advanced Histopathology Department and robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery system. The upgrades enhance diagnostic precision, surgical accuracy, patient safety, and recovery outcomes, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to innovation-driven clinical care and improved healthcare delivery standards.
The upgraded Histopathology Department, originally established by the late Dr. Anita Borges, has been relaunched as a modernised facility combining its longstanding clinical legacy with enhanced diagnostic capabilities. Recognised as a Centre of Excellence in histopathology by leading cancer institutions in India and abroad, the department has analysed more than 2,20,000 samples since 2003. It continues to receive complex cancer cases from across India as well as from neighbouring countries including Bangladesh and Nepal. The diagnostic spectrum covers lymphoma, breast, soft tissue, gynaecological, bladder, prostate, lung, and gastrointestinal cancers. The upgraded facility is equipped with advanced quality control systems and refined diagnostic protocols aimed at improving accuracy, turnaround time, and clinical decision-making support for treating physicians.
Alongside this development, the hospital introduced a robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery system designed to function as an intelligent surgical assistant. The system enhances precision in procedures such as Unilateral Knee Replacement and Total Hip Replacement by enabling improved implant positioning, accurate alignment, reduced surgical trauma, and faster patient recovery outcomes.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Kunal Punamiya, Chief Executive Officer, S.L. Raheja Hospital, Mahim – A Fortis Associate, stated that the initiatives reflect the hospital’s continued commitment over its 45-year journey to strengthening patient care across the full treatment continuum. He noted that the upgraded Histopathology Department will enable faster clinical decision-making, while robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery will enhance procedural precision and patient outcomes.
Dr Pravin Mahajan, Head of Department – Histopathology, dedicated the upgraded department to the late Dr. Anita Borges, describing it as a centre built on accuracy, integrity, and trust. He highlighted its national reputation for providing second opinions in complex cases and emphasised the patient-centric nature of its diagnostic work.
The department is further strengthened by specialists including Dr Maria Alina DeSouza, Consultant Histopathologist, and Dr Vivek Parameshwar, Consultant Histopathologist, contributing to enhanced diagnostic precision.
On the orthopaedic advancement, Dr Lalit Panchal, Senior Consultant – Orthopaedic Surgery, described robotic-assisted surgery as a supportive system that improves surgical planning, execution, and outcomes, enabling safer and minimally invasive procedures with faster recovery and more natural results. The robotic programme is also supported by Dr Vaibhav Kasodekar, Senior Consultant – Orthopaedic Surgeon, and Dr Anoop Dhamangaonkar, Consultant – Joint Replacement and Orthopaedic Surgeon.
With these dual advancements, S.L. Raheja Hospital – A Fortis Associate strengthens its focus on clinical excellence, patient safety, and improved healthcare outcomes through technology-driven innovation.
