Maharashtra Home Department Orders Probe into Mumbai Police Reimbursement Delays Amidst Missing Records
The Maharashtra Home Department has ordered a probe into the Mumbai Police North Region over a year-long delay in medical and LTA reimbursements. Investigating officers found missing records and a lack of cooperation from administrative officer Jyotsna Sheikh despite funds being available. The report may reach CM Devendra Fadnavis as authorities consider a state-wide audit of the police payment system.
In a targeted move to address these discrepancies, a Home Department probe team was recently dispatched to the North Region to scrutinize documents and obtain information related to administrative officer Jyotsna Sheikh. The investigation took a suspicious turn when the team encountered a startling lack of transparency and an absence of expected records. Senior officials confirmed to ABP News that the team found neither a comprehensive register nor the necessary documentation to verify the status of the pending claims. Instead of a systematic filing system, the investigators were presented with only two to three sporadic entries, raising serious alarms regarding the potential manipulation or disappearance of official records.
The investigative action followed repeated failures by Jyotsna Sheikh to provide a coherent explanation for the mounting delays. Despite multiple attempts by the department to establish contact and explicit directives for her to appear before the board, the officer reportedly non-complied, necessitating the on-site inspection. Under standard operating protocols, medical and LTA reimbursements are mandated to be cleared within a window of three to six months. However, the current probe has identified cases languishing for over a year. The non-payment of these funds is particularly egregious as police personnel frequently incur out-of-pocket expenses for medical treatments, travel during the pursuit of suspects, and various forensic procedures.
Sources indicate that the refusal to cooperate and the conspicuous absence of data have strengthened suspicions of deep-seated irregularities within the North Region’s administrative wing. The probe team is currently finalizing an exhaustive report for submission to senior Home Department officials, the findings of which may escalate the matter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for further executive action. Officials have signaled that the scope of this inquiry may soon expand beyond the North Region to include a comprehensive audit of reimbursement systems across Mumbai and the broader state of Maharashtra. This investigation serves as a precursor to potential disciplinary proceedings and a systemic overhaul to ensure that those who serve and protect are not denied their rightful financial dues.
