Akola records India’s highest temperature at 46.9°C as a severe heat wave engulfs Vidarbha. IMD issues orange and yellow alerts across multiple districts, warning of continued extreme conditions until Tuesday, with slight relief expected later through rainfall and gusty winds.

Nagpur: A blistering heat wave tightened its grip over the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, with Akola recording the highest temperature in the country at a scorching 46.9 degrees Celsius, according to meteorological officials on Monday.

The extreme weather conditions extended across multiple districts, with Amravati registering 46.8 degrees Celsius, Wardha at 46.4 degrees Celsius, and Yavatmal touching 46 degrees Celsius. Nagpur recorded a searing 45.4 degrees Celsius, while Chandrapur logged 45 degrees Celsius, reflecting widespread and intense heat across the region.

Officials from the India Meteorological Department’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Nagpur confirmed that Akola, Amravati, Wardha, Yavatmal, Chandrapur, and Nagpur are currently experiencing heat wave conditions, while several other districts are witnessing above-normal temperatures. RMC scientist Dr Praveen Kumar attributed the persistent and extreme heat to an anticyclonic circulation prevailing over Maharashtra and adjoining areas, combined with continuous inflow of hot and dry northwesterly winds.

The situation has been further aggravated by weak western disturbances and the absence of moisture incursion or any significant weather systems, which have intensified the heat across the region. These factors have collectively created stable atmospheric conditions, preventing any cooling mechanisms from developing.

The Meteorological Department has warned that heat wave conditions are likely to persist at a few or isolated locations in Vidarbha until Tuesday. An orange alert has been issued for Akola, Amravati, and Wardha, indicating a need for preparedness, while a yellow alert has been sounded for Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal, urging caution. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 45 and 46 degrees Celsius, with isolated areas potentially touching 47 degrees Celsius.

However, a marginal relief is anticipated thereafter, with temperatures likely to decline by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. The department has also indicated the possibility of rainfall accompanied by gusty winds in the coming days, which may help ease the prevailing conditions.

The India Meteorological Department classifies weather warnings through a color-coded system: green for no warning, yellow for awareness, orange for preparedness, and red for immediate action. The current alerts underline the severity of the ongoing heat wave, which continues to pose significant challenges to daily life and public health across Vidarbha.
