Prime Minister Modi and Rahul Gandhi Share Rare Cordial Exchange During Mahatma Phule Homage
A rare and cordial video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has gone viral following their meeting at the Parliament complex. During the 200th birth anniversary tributes to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, PM Modi inquired about Sonia Gandhi’s health following her recent hospitalisation for a systemic infection, marking a significant moment of civility.
The footage documents Prime Minister Modi greeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers JP Nadda and Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Rahul Gandhi, among others. In a notable moment, the Prime Minister stopped specifically to engage the Leader of the Opposition in conversation. According to sources, Prime Minister Modi inquired about the health of Gandhi’s mother and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who was recently hospitalised. Gandhi informed the Prime Minister that her health is improving, to which the Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction and extended his best wishes.
Sonia Gandhi had been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on March 24 after suffering from a fever; she was subsequently discharged on March 31 following her recovery from a systemic infection, a condition characterized by pathogens entering the bloodstream and spreading throughout the body.
Earlier on Saturday morning, Prime Minister Modi took to X to describe Mahatma Phule as a "guiding light," asserting that the reformer's emphasis on education, learning, and the welfare of all remains profoundly relevant in the modern age. After paying his respects, the Prime Minister further stated that he had paid homage to Mahatma Phule in the Parliament complex and expressed his hope that Phule’s ideals continue to provide strength and hope to countless people.
This rare display of parliamentary courtesy between the two primary political adversaries underscores a moment of personal empathy amidst intense political rivalry. The exchange, centered on a personal inquiry regarding a veteran leader's health during a high-profile commemorative event, has resonated deeply as a testament to the enduring traditions of civility within India's democratic framework.
