Galgotias University has emerged as a key centre for Indian lacrosse as it hosts the National Coaching Camp for the country’s Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Teams ahead of major international tournaments, marking a significant step in India’s preparations for the Los Angeles Olympic Games 2028.

The national camp is being conducted as the teams prepare for the Southeast Asian Cup 2026 in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific Lacrosse Sixes Championship 2026 in Sunshine Coast, Australia. Lacrosse, regarded as one of the fastest-growing team sports in the world, combines speed, strategy, athleticism and teamwork. With the Sixes format scheduled to feature at the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, nations across the globe are strengthening athlete development and international competition pathways. India’s recent performances at global events have accelerated the growth of the sport and opened new avenues for aspiring players.

A total of 63 athletes from across the country are participating in the camp. The contingent includes players from Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, and Andhra Pradesh. The Men’s Team consists of 33 players, while the Women’s Team comprises 30 players, underlining the increasing reach and popularity of lacrosse in India.

The camp is being led by Ms. Yukari Yamamoto, an accomplished Japanese lacrosse player and coach who is serving as Head Coach of the Indian National Team Camp. Having represented Japan in international competitions and coached at major events including the Asian Lacrosse Games and the Lacrosse Federation Cup, she brings extensive international expertise to the development of the sport in India. The camp follows a historic year for Indian lacrosse. Earlier in 2026, both the Indian Men’s and Women’s Teams captured Gold Medals at the Asian Lacrosse Games in Riyadh, a milestone achievement that strengthened India’s standing in international lacrosse and highlighted the sport’s growing presence in the country.

Hosting the National Coaching Camp further expands Galgotias University’s role in high-performance sports. The development comes shortly after athletes from the university delivered an impressive performance at the inaugural World Yogasana Championship 2026 in Ahmedabad. Students secured five Gold Medals while competing against participants from 79 countries. The championship featured 522 athletes from around the world, with India finishing at the top of the medal tally with 114 medals, including 102 gold medals. The achievement reinforced the institution’s growing contribution to Indian sports across emerging and traditional disciplines.
