e-Shram Portal: How India’s Digital Database Aims to Improve Access to Social Security Benefits

The e-Shram portal aims to improve access to government welfare schemes and social security benefits for India's unorganised workers. Understand how the national database works and why registration does not guarantee every benefit.

The Government of India has developed the e-Shram portal to create a national database of workers in the unorganised sector and make information about government welfare schemes and social security benefits more accessible through a common digital platform.

The initiative aims to bring workers from different occupations onto a single platform, enabling them to access information about various government welfare and social security initiatives. By consolidating relevant scheme-related information, the portal seeks to help workers understand the benefits available to them and identify programmes for which they may be eligible.

Workers in the unorganised sector often face difficulties obtaining information about government welfare programmes. The e-Shram portal seeks to address this challenge by bringing relevant information together in one place, simplifying access to details about social security benefits and improving awareness among eligible workers.

Beyond providing access to scheme-related information, the portal represents a step towards building a more organised national database of unorganised workers. The database can also support the availability of worker-related information for planning and implementing social security initiatives.

The initiative is intended to make information about government support easier to find and understand, helping unorganised workers stay informed about welfare schemes and the assistance available to them. However, registration on the e-Shram portal does not automatically guarantee eligibility for or receipt of every benefit, as individual government schemes have their own eligibility conditions.
