The victim, Kunal Singh, a 35-year-old traffic police officer posted in the MIDC branch, was returning home in his private car after completing duty. While passing through the Mankapur Road area near the Martin Nagar bridge, he observed multiple motorcycles being ridden in a dangerous zigzag manner, with each bike carrying two to three riders. Singh sounded his horn to alert the riders and caution them about reckless driving.
Initially, the motorcyclists moved aside and proceeded ahead. However, the situation escalated dramatically near the Mankapur Junction traffic signal when one of the motorcycles allegedly struck the rear of Singh’s car. What began as a road safety warning quickly transformed into a violent confrontation.
The riders stopped Singh’s vehicle, hurled verbal abuse, and issued death threats. They then pelted stones at the car, causing significant damage to the bonnet and other parts of the vehicle. When Singh stepped out of the car, he was physically attacked, sustaining injuries to his neck and back. The assailants fled the scene only after nearby pedestrians intervened upon hearing the commotion.
In the aftermath, a witness managed to note down the registration number of one of the motorcycles, which proved crucial in the investigation. Acting on CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, the Mankapur Police Station launched a coordinated operation and arrested 14 individuals involved in the assault. Officials confirmed that three of the accused have prior criminal records.
Police have also seized details of multiple motorcycles used in the incident. Senior police officials have assured strict legal action against all accused and announced increased night-time patrolling in the area to curb reckless riding, including triple riding and dangerous stunts.
Local residents have raised strong concerns over repeated instances of irresponsible late-night biking and have demanded stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent similar violent incidents in the future.
The case underscores growing concerns over road safety violations turning into organized violence, highlighting urgent enforcement challenges in urban traffic management.
