Indian U-18 Hockey Teams Gear Up for Crucial Australia Series After Intensive Training Camp in Bhopal

India’s Under-18 men’s and women’s hockey teams are set for a high-stakes international series against Australia after intensive training at SAI Bhopal. Led by Ketan Kushwaha and Sweety Kujur, both squads undergo crucial development under Sardar Singh and Rani ahead of Japan tournament preparations.

The upcoming international hockey series between India and Australia will serve as the first major international examination for the country’s newly formed Under-18 men’s and women’s squads, following an intensive selection and preparation phase in Bhopal. The squads were shortlisted based on performances in the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior National Championship 2026 and subsequently inducted into the national coaching camp at the Sports Authority of India Centre in Bhopal.

Over the past month, both teams have undergone rigorous training designed to refine technical skills and build collective cohesion. The Indian Under-18 Men’s Team and Indian Under-18 Women’s Team have been training under the supervision of former Indian captains Sardar Singh and Rani, respectively, focusing on foundational skills, tactical awareness, and high-performance standards required at the international level.

The camp has brought together some of the most promising junior hockey players from across the country, many of whom were working together as a unified squad for the first time. The structured environment has been critical in developing team chemistry ahead of a demanding international assignment against Australia, followed by a major continental tournament in Japan.

The men’s team, captained by Ketan Kushwaha, will begin its campaign on 15 May at 5:00 PM Indian Standard Time. The second match is scheduled for 17 May at 7:00 PM, followed by the third encounter on 18 May at 5:00 PM. The final match of the series will take place on 20 May at 10:00 AM.

Women’s team coach Rani underlined the unprecedented nature of this exposure at the Under-18 level against a team like Australia. She noted that players from diverse cultural and regional backgrounds had to be integrated into a single unit representing the country. She further explained that the transition required players to step outside their comfort zones, while also emphasizing the importance of managing workload and preventing injuries during this critical developmental stage.

Australia Under-18 Men’s Team coach Dan Mitchell stated that the focus of his side had been on building unity and preparing for a strong challenge. He acknowledged admiration for India’s style of play and described the upcoming matches as a significant test and learning opportunity for his players.

Australia Under-18 Women’s Team coach Matt Cook echoed similar views, emphasizing player development through international exposure. He noted that the tour would help athletes understand competitive conditions, adapt to travel, and experience diverse playing environments. He also expressed hope that the series would strengthen sporting relations between India and Australia and support the development of future generations of players for major global competitions.

The series is expected to serve as a decisive platform for evaluating combinations, measuring preparedness, and shaping the trajectory of India’s youth hockey pipeline ahead of future international commitments.A
