In a video shared on Instagram, Annapurna described the episode as one of the most traumatic travel experiences she had encountered. According to her account, airline staff at Luang Prabang airport refused to allow her to board the flight unless she could physically show cash, even after she provided bank statements, travel history records, and evidence of adequate financial resources through digital platforms.
Annapurna stated that she had entered Cambodia from Bangkok just two weeks earlier without facing any such requirement. During that earlier journey, she said she had paid for her visa on arrival using a bank card without difficulty. However, while attempting to re-enter Cambodia from Laos, she alleged that officials insisted on proof of cash holdings and declined to accept digital financial documents as valid evidence.
The solo traveller said the incident left her feeling humiliated and distressed. She urged Indian tourists travelling across Southeast Asia to carry physical currency in order to avoid similar situations during immigration and airline checks. She also alleged that airline personnel failed to provide any official documentation or written policy when she requested clarification regarding the cash requirement.
Describing the experience in the caption accompanying her Instagram video, Annapurna called it “the worst, traumatising experience” she had faced at an airport.
She further claimed that she had encountered similar scrutiny while entering Laos from Cambodia through a land border crossing. According to her, authorities at the crossing demanded proof of a return flight ticket because they suspected she might attempt to remain in the country illegally for employment purposes.
In a follow-up Instagram Story, Annapurna confirmed that she eventually returned safely to Cambodia and thanked her followers for their support during the ordeal.
The video triggered widespread reactions across social media platforms, with several users recounting comparable experiences while travelling in parts of Southeast Asia. Many commenters claimed that Indian passport holders often face heightened scrutiny at airports and border checkpoints in the region.
One user stated that Indian travellers are frequently subjected to such treatment at several airports and by certain airlines, adding that tourists should research the reputation and history of airports and carriers before travelling. Another user claimed to have faced a similar incident while flying from Bangkok to Cambodia, alleging that airline staff demanded proof of $800 in cash while allowing another passenger from China to proceed without producing physical money.
The incident has reignited debate over the discretionary enforcement of financial proof requirements imposed on Indian passport holders in parts of Southeast Asia. The controversy has also prompted renewed advice among travellers that tourists should carry some amount of physical United States currency even when they possess sufficient digital funds and verified banking records.
