Kolkata Administration Demolishes Illegal Building After Deadly Fire Kills Two in Tiljala

A deadly fire in an illegal multi-storey building in Kolkata’s Tiljala area killed Rajesh Ali Mondol and Md. Zaman and left three others critically injured. Following investigations that uncovered unauthorized construction, missing fire safety systems, and unsafe electrical installations, the West Bengal administration ordered immediate demolition and announced a strict crackdown on illegal buildings.

A deadly fire in an illegal multi-storey building in Kolkata’s Tiljala area triggered swift administrative action after two people lost their lives and three others suffered critical injuries. The incident, which occurred on May 12, exposed serious violations involving unauthorized construction, lack of fire safety measures, and unsafe electrical systems inside the structure.

The deceased were identified as Rajesh Ali Mondol and Md. Zaman. Three other injured individuals remain in critical condition following the blaze that rapidly spread through the building. Authorities launched inspections immediately after the incident to determine the cause of the fire and assess the legality of the structure.

During the investigation, officials discovered that the multi-storey building had been constructed without approved plans and lacked mandatory fire safety arrangements. Inspections also revealed dangerous electrical installations, raising concerns over severe negligence and unlawful construction practices in the area.

Following the findings, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, recently sworn into office, ordered immediate demolition of the illegal structure. Bulldozers were deployed within hours, and the building was completely razed under administrative supervision.
