Chennai Government Announces 2% Dearness Allowance Hike for Employees and Pensioners
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has approved a 2% Dearness Allowance hike for government employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners, effective January. The state allocates Rs 1,230 crore for welfare, alongside initiatives in electricity, women’s safety, anti-drug measures, and financial transparency.
The decision is set to benefit nearly 16 lakh government employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners across Tamil Nadu. The government stated that the move was taken to ensure welfare despite the additional fiscal burden. The announcement followed a similar increase in Dearness Allowance by the Central Government for its employees.
Workers’ unions and pensioners’ associations have welcomed the hike, describing it as necessary relief amid rising inflation and living costs.
Since assuming office on May 10, Chief Minister Vijay has prioritized welfare measures. On his first day in office, he sanctioned a scheme providing 200 units of free electricity per month for all households and committed to offering a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to women heading households.
Vijay has also launched a special task force for women’s safety, named the "Lioness Special Task Force," and directed the creation of dedicated anti-drug task forces in every district. Furthermore, over 700 state-run liquor stores located near schools and places of worship have been closed to enhance community safety.
To address the debt accumulated by the previous administration, the Chief Minister has announced the release of a white paper detailing the state’s financial status.
The government’s actions, including the Dearness Allowance hike and extensive welfare measures, demonstrate a strong focus on social security, financial transparency, and public safety, aiming to enhance the quality of life for citizens across Tamil Nadu.
