MMRDA Clears Over 1.14 Lakh Metres of Barricades Across Mumbai Metro Corridors in Major Pre-Monsoon Push for 2026

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has removed over 1.14 lakh metres of barricades across multiple metro corridors in a major pre-monsoon drive for 2026. The initiative aims to restore road space, ease congestion, and improve drainage while enhancing commuter mobility and safety across key Mumbai Metropolitan Region routes.

In a significant pre-monsoon infrastructure operation across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has carried out a large-scale barricade removal and monsoon preparedness drive across multiple ongoing metro rail projects ahead of the 2026 monsoon season. The exercise aims to restore road space, ease traffic congestion, and ensure smoother stormwater drainage across key arterial routes.

According to the authority, more than 1.14 lakh metres of barricades have already been removed from completed stretches beneath metro viaducts across several corridors. The drive has been prioritised in locations where viaduct construction, pier work, and major structural activities have either been completed or have reached advanced stages. Officials stated that the initiative is intended to expand carriageway width and improve vehicular movement during the monsoon period.

Substantial progress has been reported across multiple metro lines. On Metro Line 2B, connecting D. N. Nagar and Mandale, 18,277 metres of barricades have been removed, representing 88.64 per cent completion of the targeted stretch. On Metro Lines 4 and 4A, connecting Wadala, Kasarvadavali, and Gaimukh, approximately 31,706 metres of barricades have been cleared, marking nearly 92 per cent completion.

Metro Line 5, which runs between Thane and Bhiwandi, has recorded the removal of 11,134 metres of barricades. Metro Line 6, connecting Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli, has witnessed the removal of 28,952 metres. On Metro Line 9, linking Dahisar East and Mira Bhayander, 17,275 metres of barricades have been removed. Meanwhile, Metro Line 12 between Kalyan and Taloja has seen 7,174 metres of barricade removal. Phased reduction work is also underway on Metro Line 7A, connecting Andheri East and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The state leadership has emphasised commuter-centric infrastructure management. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that metro development must deliver mobility benefits even during construction phases. He noted that restoring road space before the monsoon would significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion across Mumbai and the metropolitan region. “Metro infrastructure is not only about constructing corridors but also about ensuring that citizens receive mobility benefits even during construction. The removal of barricades and restoration of road space before the monsoon is a citizen-centric step that will improve traffic flow and ease congestion,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde stressed the importance of timely clearance of barricades from completed stretches, particularly ahead of the monsoon. He stated that road space is being systematically returned to citizens as construction progresses, and directed that maximum carriageway width be restored wherever major structural work has been completed to ensure commuter relief.

MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee described the initiative as one of the largest coordinated monsoon preparedness exercises in the region. He stated that with major structural works substantially completed across several corridors, barricades beneath completed metro stretches are being systematically removed to restore maximum road space. He further added that all contractors, consultants, and project agencies have been instructed to deploy dedicated emergency response teams, dewatering pumps, emergency machinery, safety personnel, and round-the-clock systems to ensure commuter safety and uninterrupted mobility during the monsoon season.

The coordinated effort underscores a large-scale administrative push to balance infrastructure development with urban mobility needs, ensuring that critical road networks remain functional and resilient during the monsoon period.
