Government Rejects “Austerity” Label as PM Modi Pushes Energy Conservation and Self-Reliance Drive

The Central Government has rejected claims that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s energy conservation appeal amounts to austerity measures. Officials said the initiative focuses on reducing fuel consumption, lowering foreign exchange outflows, promoting self-reliance, and encouraging efficient resource use amid global market uncertainty caused by Middle East tensions.

The Central Government has strongly rejected descriptions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for energy conservation and reduced foreign exchange outflows as “austerity measures,” asserting that the term is misleading and economically inaccurate in the present context.

Government sources clarified that the administration is not pursuing austerity in the conventional sense associated with fiscal tightening, budget cuts, reduced public expenditure, or withdrawal of subsidies. Officials stated that the government has not reduced capital expenditure, welfare allocations, or subsidy support, and emphasized that the Prime Minister’s message was aimed at encouraging efficient consumption and economic self-reliance rather than limiting spending.

According to sources, the Prime Minister’s appeal focused on reducing unnecessary fuel consumption, lowering dependence on imported products, and cutting expenditure on foreign-currency-intensive services. The clarification came after remarks made by Prime Minister Modi during a rally organized by the Telangana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Hyderabad on Sunday, against the backdrop of tensions in the Middle East that have affected global markets.

During the rally, the Prime Minister urged citizens to adopt practical measures to conserve fuel and foreign exchange reserves. His suggestions included reducing petrol and diesel usage, preferring metro rail services in urban areas, encouraging carpooling, accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, using railway networks for parcel transportation, and opting for work-from-home arrangements wherever feasible.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reinforced the Prime Minister’s message by calling for reduced use of foreign products and greater emphasis on domestic manufacturing and self-reliance. He stated that the Prime Minister had consistently guided citizens toward limiting dependence on goods sourced from outside the country.

In a direct follow-up to his public appeal, Prime Minister Modi significantly reduced the size of his official convoy during domestic visits while retaining mandatory security arrangements under Special Protection Group protocol. The smaller convoy formations were observed during his recent visits to Gujarat and Assam shortly after the Hyderabad address. The Prime Minister also instructed officials to incorporate electric vehicles into his convoy wherever possible without purchasing additional vehicles.

The Prime Minister’s appeal triggered immediate responses from several Bharatiya Janata Party-led state governments and senior political leaders across the country.

In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chaired a high-level meeting attended by the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Additional Chief Secretaries, and Principal Secretaries of all departments. During the meeting, he directed an immediate 50 percent reduction in the number of vehicles accompanying the Chief Minister and ministers.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that he would personally use a minimum number of vehicles in his convoy and instructed ministers in his government to adopt similar measures.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced restrictions on the use of official vehicles by ministers, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and public representatives.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma directed officials to minimize the use of his convoy and avoid unnecessary deployment of vehicles, particularly for security arrangements.

In Maharashtra, the government directed all ministers to seek prior approval from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis before using aircraft for official travel.

Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat announced that he would travel within the state using trains, state transport buses, and other forms of public transportation instead of helicopters and flights.

In Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary stated that he had personally reduced the number of vehicles in his official convoy by half.

The government’s clarification and the rapid adoption of conservation measures by senior political leaders have transformed the Prime Minister’s appeal into a broader administrative campaign focused on energy efficiency, reduced fuel dependence, controlled foreign exchange outflows, and promotion of domestic self-reliance amid global economic uncertainty linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
