Opposition Leaders Demand Consultations After Modi Calls for Austerity Amid West Asia Crisis

Opposition leaders Sharad Pawar and Raj Thackeray strongly reacted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s austerity appeal amid the West Asia conflict. Pawar demanded an all-party meeting and consultations with economic experts, while Thackeray questioned fuel pricing policies, government expenditure, and public burden during rising crude oil prices.

Amid growing political reactions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for austerity measures during the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday demanded that the Centre convene an all-party meeting to address the emerging economic and geopolitical concerns. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray sharply criticised the Prime Minister’s appeal, questioning why citizens should bear the consequences of what he described as the government’s failures.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to adopt austerity measures in response to the escalating tensions in West Asia. His appeal included reducing petrol and diesel consumption, opting for work-from-home arrangements wherever possible, postponing foreign travel, and temporarily avoiding gold purchases.

Reacting to the announcement, Pawar stated that the sudden nature of the Prime Minister’s remarks had generated anxiety among ordinary citizens, industrial sectors, businesses, and investors. In a post on X, he said the situation carried serious implications for the national economy and required broader political consultation.

Pawar said the Prime Minister should immediately convene an all-party meeting under his chairmanship, stressing that involving leaders from across the political spectrum in decisions concerning national interest was essential for the country’s welfare. He further stated that, given the prevailing international circumstances, the central government must demonstrate greater sensitivity and initiate wider consultations.

He also called for an urgent meeting between the Prime Minister, leading economists, industry representatives, and subject experts to comprehensively review the economic situation and formulate future policy responses.

Raj Thackeray, in a separate post on X, launched a direct attack on the Prime Minister’s austerity appeal. He questioned whether the government would first reduce the extensive use of official convoys and large-scale political events involving massive fuel consumption.

Thackeray said the government should acknowledge its own mistakes before asking the public to sacrifice. He criticised the continued use of hundreds of vehicles in official convoys and political campaigns, asking whether the leadership would commit to ending such practices in the future.

Referring to global crude oil prices, Thackeray argued that international markets had previously witnessed similar price levels without comparable appeals for austerity. He pointed out that crude oil prices had reached between 90 and 100 dollars per barrel during multiple periods, including the global developments following 2008, the Arab Spring during 2011 and 2012, the 2013-2014 period, and again during 2022 and 2023 after production cuts by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

He noted that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had governed during several of those periods and had not issued such appeals. Thackeray also questioned why Prime Minister Modi himself had not made similar requests during previous oil price spikes.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief further alleged that when crude oil prices were significantly lower, between 60 and 65 dollars per barrel, petrol and diesel prices for consumers in India had still remained high. He questioned how the large revenues collected through fuel pricing had been utilised by the government.

Thackeray also criticised the extensive fuel consumption during election campaigns and political roadshows held across states including West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. He said the government had mobilised massive crowds and consumed enormous quantities of petrol and diesel during those campaigns, asking why concerns over fuel conservation had not arisen at that time.

The political confrontation over the Prime Minister’s austerity appeal has intensified the national debate over rising energy costs, fuel pricing, public expenditure, and the broader economic consequences of the continuing geopolitical instability in West Asia. The sharp responses from opposition leaders reflect increasing pressure on the central government to justify its economic strategy and build wider political consensus during a period of growing uncertainty.
