VD Satheesan Chosen as Kerala Chief Minister, Ending Congress’ 10-Day Leadership Suspense

The announcement, which was expected on Wednesday evening before being delayed until Thursday, finally settled intense speculation within the Congress leadership. Satheesan, who has never previously served as a minister, credited his elevation to the support of Congress workers and the United Democratic Front coalition.

Speaking after the announcement, Satheesan said he achieved the position through the backing of lakhs of Congress workers and the collective support of Team UDF. His appointment is being viewed as a major political milestone after leading the Congress-led alliance from defeat to a commanding electoral comeback.

Venugopal, widely regarded as one of Rahul Gandhi’s closest associates in the party and considered a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s post, accepted the high command’s decision and publicly extended support to Satheesan and the incoming UDF government. Venugopal, a Member of Parliament from Alappuzha, said he was fully satisfied with the party’s decision and would stand with the leadership’s choice.

The delay in selecting Kerala’s Chief Minister drew comparisons with the Congress leadership crisis in Karnataka, where the power struggle between Siddaramaiah and D. K. Shivakumar created prolonged internal friction within the party and among supporters.

According to sources close to Satheesan, the senior Congress leader, who enjoyed support from the public as well as the Congress party’s ally and UDF constituent Indian Union Muslim League, was unwilling to accept a secondary political role. The support of the Indian Union Muslim League carried significant political importance, particularly because Wayanad has traditionally been a constituency represented by the party. The seat was later ceded to the Congress at the party’s request, first for Rahul Gandhi and subsequently for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. With Muslim voters playing a decisive role in the constituency, the Congress leadership was understood to be taking the Indian Union Muslim League’s position seriously. The party secured 22 seats in the Assembly elections.

The announcement came 10 days after the Congress-led United Democratic Front secured a more than two-thirds majority by winning 102 seats in the Kerala Assembly elections. The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front, headed by Pinarayi Vijayan, failed to secure a third consecutive electoral victory in the state.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the largest opposition party, is yet to announce its Leader of Opposition. Internal voices within the party have reportedly questioned whether Pinarayi Vijayan should continue in the role after leading the Left Democratic Front campaign. The party has stated that its Politburo will take the final decision.

Satheesan, a six-time Member of the Legislative Assembly, commands strong support among Congress workers, party cadres, and the public at the grassroots level. Many political observers viewed the UDF’s sweeping mandate as a direct endorsement of his leadership, organisational approach, and powerful public speaking abilities.

Senior Congress leaders including A. K. Antony, V. M. Sudheeran and K. Muraleedharan reportedly urged the party leadership to respect public sentiment, which overwhelmingly favoured Satheesan for the Chief Minister’s position.

A practicing lawyer at the High Court of Kerala, Satheesan first entered the Kerala Assembly in 2001 after winning from North Paravur in Ernakulam District. He has represented the Paravur constituency continuously for 25 years and is now serving his sixth consecutive term as a legislator.

Before entering mainstream politics, Satheesan served as Chairman of the MG University Union while representing the Kerala Students Union, the youth wing of the Indian National Congress. His rise from student politics to the state’s top political office marks one of the most significant leadership transitions in Kerala’s recent political history.
