NDA Expansion Continues as BJP Keeps Door Open for Future Alliance With Shiromani Akali Dal Ahead of Punjab Polls
The Bharatiya Janata Party has kept the possibility of a future alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal open ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Party president Nitin Navin said the immediate focus remains on strengthening the organization across all 117 constituencies, while political developments continue to reshape the National Democratic Alliance's position in Parliament.
During his visit to Punjab, Bharatiya Janata Party national president Nitin Navin clarified the party's position regarding a possible future alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal or any other Akali faction. Responding to questions at a media conclave in Jalandhar, he said that a final decision on alliance-related matters would be taken only at the appropriate time.
The party chief indicated that the possibility of renewing ties with the Shiromani Akali Dal has not been completely ruled out. However, he emphasized that the party's immediate priority is to strengthen its organization independently in Punjab. Although the Shiromani Akali Dal currently has only one member in the Lok Sabha, an electoral alliance between the two parties could strengthen the Bharatiya Janata Party's position in the Punjab Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media, Nitin Navin said that under the present circumstances, the Bharatiya Janata Party intends to reinforce its organizational structure across all 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab. He stated that the party is currently focused on increasing its own strength and that when elections draw closer, it will assess the ground situation before taking any decision. He added that the party is neither in favor of nor opposed to an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal at this stage.
The Bharatiya Janata Party president made it clear that the party has adopted a strategy of moving forward independently for the time being. He said that many issues would become clearer with time and that over the next six months the party would strengthen its presence in every Assembly constituency, raise issues concerning the public and expand its outreach among voters. According to him, there is still considerable time left before any decision on an alliance needs to be made.
During his three-day visit to Punjab, Nitin Navin also held closed-door strategic meetings in Ludhiana with senior party leaders, former ministers and former legislators. According to sources, the national president delivered a firm message to the Punjab cadre, directing leaders not to make any public statements regarding a possible alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
The Shiromani Akali Dal had ended its two-decade-long association with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the National Democratic Alliance in 2020 over opposition to the three agricultural laws. In the current political environment, with the Aam Aadmi Party governing Punjab and the Congress attempting to regain ground, Nitin Navin's remarks have kept alive the possibility of fresh political equations. The statement has also signaled that the Bharatiya Janata Party is determined to strengthen its organization while leaving room for future alliances ahead of the crucial 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
