Indian Army Chief Outlines Digital Transformation Road Map; Reaffirms 'Naam, Namak, Nishan' Ethos on Army Day 2026

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi marks Army Day 2026 by declaring a shift toward 'Networking and Data-Centricity.' Highlighting the success of Operation Sindoor and the 'Naam, Namak, Nishan' ethos, the General outlines a modern vision for a digitized, self-reliant force aligned with the Viksit Bharat 2047 goal.

Marking a pivotal moment in India’s military evolution, General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, delivered a stirring address on Army Day 2026, blending the force’s storied traditions with an aggressive leap toward modernization. Invoking the sacred military trinity of ‘Naam, Namak, Nishan’—representing the honor of the regiment, loyalty to the nation, and the glory of the tricolor—the Army Chief reaffirmed the infantry’s core values while simultaneously unveiling a vision for a data-driven future. This year’s celebrations stood out as a transition point, as the General formally designated 2026 and 2027 as the ‘Years of Networking and Data-Centricity,’ signaling a shift from traditional warfare paradigms toward a fully integrated, technologically superior fighting force.

Reflecting on the operational successes of the past year, General Dwivedi lauded the triumph of 'Operation Sindoor,' citing it as a testament to the Army’s decisive strike capabilities and its readiness to neutralize threats in complex environments. Beyond active combat, the General highlighted the force's dual role as a humanitarian vanguard, noting its rapid response during natural disasters both domestically and in support of partner nations. This commitment to service extends to the global stage, where Indian troops continue to serve as the backbone of United Nations Peacekeeping (UNPK) missions, reinforcing India’s stature as a reliable and ethical global security partner.

The core of the General’s vision, however, lies in the radical restructuring of the Army’s operational DNA to align with the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' national objective. By prioritizing 'Jointness'—the seamless coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force—and adhering to the 'DIME-T' framework (Diplomacy, Information, Military, Economy, and Technology), the leadership aims to secure victory in multi-domain environments. This digital pivot is part of a broader 'Decade of Transformation' intended to convert the Indian Army into a networked powerhouse. General Dwivedi emphasized that the focus on self-reliance (Atmanirbharta) is no longer just a policy goal but a functional reality that ensures the military remains autonomous and resilient against shifting geopolitical tides.

Amidst the strategic discourse on technology and reform, the address remained deeply rooted in the human element of the service. General Dwivedi paid a somber tribute to the fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice on the altar of duty. He expressed profound gratitude to the 'Veer Naris' (war widows), 'Veer Matas' (mothers of martyrs), and the veteran community, describing them as the moral pillars of the institution. By emphasizing that the welfare of military families is a non-negotiable priority, the Army Chief underscored that while the tools of war are changing, the spirit of the Indian soldier remains anchored in an unbreakable bond of sacrifice and national service. This vision for 2026 sets a high bar for the force, balancing the weight of historical legacy with the demands of an increasingly digital battlefield.
