Retirement Income: Post Office MIS, SCSS and NPS Explained With Earnings

Explore how Post Office MIS, SCSS and NPS can help generate retirement income. Compare interest rates of 7.4% and 8.2%, investment limits and estimated monthly earnings to plan your post-retirement finances.

Retirement brings an end to regular salary payments, but household expenses such as groceries, electricity bills and medicines continue. For people who want a steady income after retirement, government-backed savings schemes offer options to generate returns from accumulated savings. The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS), Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) and National Pension System (NPS) are among the options to consider, with different investment limits, interest rates and payout schedules.

The amount an investor can earn depends on the scheme selected, the amount invested and the applicable terms. Understanding these differences can help retirees plan their finances and assess how much income they can generate to meet their monthly expenses.

Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS)

The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme is designed for investors who need regular monthly interest income. Under this scheme, investors deposit a lump sum and receive interest every month.

The current annual interest rate is 7.4%. An investment of Rs 5 lakh would generate approximately Rs 3,083 per month, while a deposit of Rs 9 lakh would provide around Rs 5,550 per month.

The maximum investment limit for an individual account is Rs 9 lakh. For a joint account, the limit is Rs 15 lakh. If a husband and wife invest Rs 15 lakh jointly, they would receive approximately Rs 9,250 in monthly interest.

The scheme has a tenure of five years. Once the tenure ends, the original investment amount is returned to the investor. This makes MIS an option for those seeking monthly interest payments from a lump-sum deposit.

Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS)

The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme is primarily intended for people aged 60 years and above. Retired individuals aged 55 years or older may also invest, subject to certain conditions.

The scheme offers an annual interest rate of 8.2%, with a maximum investment limit of Rs 30 lakh. Unlike MIS, however, SCSS pays interest quarterly rather than monthly.

For example, an investment of Rs 10 lakh would generate approximately Rs 82,000 in annual interest. This translates into a quarterly payment of around Rs 20,500.

Investors depositing the maximum permitted amount of Rs 30 lakh would earn approximately Rs 2.46 lakh in annual interest. They would receive Rs 61,500 every three months. Calculated on a monthly basis, this amounts to approximately Rs 20,500.

Although the interest is paid quarterly, the monthly equivalent can help investors estimate how much the scheme may contribute towards their regular living expenses.

National Pension System (NPS)

The National Pension System is intended for people who build retirement savings during their working years and want to receive a pension after retirement.

Under NPS, the accumulated money is invested. At retirement, a portion of the corpus can be withdrawn as a lump sum, subject to the applicable rules, while another portion is used to purchase an annuity that provides regular pension payments.

Consider an example in which an investor has Rs 50 lakh in their NPS account at retirement. If 40% of the corpus is allocated to an annuity, Rs 20 lakh would be used for this purpose.

Assuming the annuity provides an annual pension equivalent to 6% of the amount invested, the Rs 20 lakh annuity would generate Rs 1.2 lakh per year. This would amount to a monthly pension of approximately Rs 10,000.

The actual pension depends on the accumulated retirement corpus and the terms of the annuity. Therefore, the monthly income an investor receives will depend on the amount available at retirement and the applicable annuity conditions.

Which Scheme Offers the Best Retirement Income?

The choice between MIS, SCSS and NPS depends on whether an individual already has retirement savings or is building a retirement fund for the future.

For people who have accumulated savings and want regular income, MIS and SCSS offer two different payout options. MIS provides monthly interest, while SCSS pays interest every three months. NPS, meanwhile, is intended for retirement planning, with pension income depending on the accumulated corpus and annuity terms.

Investors should first calculate their monthly household expenses and compare them with the income expected from their chosen scheme. For instance, someone who needs Rs 20,000 per month to manage household expenses should assess how much their investment will generate and how much of the required amount will remain uncovered.

This calculation can help retirees determine whether a single scheme will meet their income needs or whether they need to plan their savings more carefully. Understanding the investment limits, interest rates and payment schedules of MIS, SCSS and NPS is essential when deciding how to generate a regular income after retirement.
