The matter dates back to May 20, 2026, when several bedbugs were found in the old sofas in the VIP room. Following the incident, the Judicial Magistrate wrote to the DRM and informed the railway authorities about the condition of the room. The authorities were directed to carry out pest control, replace the existing sofas with new ones and ensure proper maintenance of the VIP room.
However, by September 19, nearly four months after the directions were issued, neither the sofas had been replaced nor had pest control been carried out. Following the alleged non-compliance, a show-cause notice was issued to the DRM of the Nanded Division.
The notice stated that bedbugs were still present in the existing sofas and described the condition as a “disgusting situation” for High Court judges to sit in. It further stated that judges were sitting in their cars instead of using the VIP room.
The notice also pointed out that more than 15 High Court judges are posted at the Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court and that most of them travel by train and have to wait in the VIP room. Railway authorities were also reprimanded for failing to respond to the earlier communication sent on May 20 or take satisfactory action on it.
The Judicial Magistrate has now asked the DRM of the Nanded Division to explain why action should not be initiated under the law relating to contempt of court for failing to comply with the earlier directions.
The DRM has been directed to appear personally before the court on September 30, 2026. The notice warned that if the directions are not complied with, further action would be initiated under the Contempt of Courts Act.
A copy of the notice has also been sent to the General Manager of South Central Railway. The RPF Inspector in Aurangabad has been directed to serve the notice and submit a report.
