Pune Ganeshotsav Noise Pollution Row: Bombay HC May Hear Plea on October 5

Bombay High Court may hear a Pune noise pollution plea on October 5, after an alleged attack linked to opposition to a loud DJ during Ganeshotsav and concerns over enforcement of court directions.

The Bombay High Court may hear a petition concerning noise pollution during Ganeshotsav in Pune on October 5, 2026, before a bench comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Sethna. Senior Advocate Anil Sakhare, however, sought an urgent hearing of the petition, informing the court that a dispute over noise pollution had emerged during the Ganeshotsav celebrations in Pune.

The court was also informed that a person was attacked for opposing a DJ playing at a high volume during the festival.

The petition has been filed by Akshay Bikkad and cites the 2016 judgment of the High Court in Mahesh Vijay Bedekar versus State of Maharashtra. In that case, the court had issued several directions for strict compliance with noise pollution rules.

The court had made it clear that obtaining the necessary permission was mandatory for the use of loudspeakers or public address systems, including at religious places. The directions also included a ban on the use of loudspeakers and sound systems between 10 pm and 6 am, immediate action upon receiving complaints, and measures to keep the identity of complainants confidential.

The petition states that these directions are not appearing to be effectively implemented at the ground level. The 2016 directions also required meetings to be organised before major festivals to inform organisers about the rules relating to noise pollution.

Effective monitoring of noise levels in residential, commercial, industrial and silence zones remains a challenge, according to the petition. In view of Ganeshotsav and upcoming festivals such as Navratri, the petitioner has sought effective enforcement of the directions issued by the court in 2016.
