The development comes after IIT Bombay decided to remove ceiling fans from all hostel rooms and replace them with wall-mounted fans. The installation of the new wall-mounted fans in hostel rooms has already begun.
Sahil Wakode had died by suicide after hanging from a ceiling fan in Hostel No. 4. The case has drawn attention across the country, following which IIT Bombay took strict action after accepting the demands raised by students.
The CCTV footage is now being examined as an important lead in the investigation. According to sources, the Crime Branch team is reviewing CCTV recordings from the examination hall through the campus and up to the hostel.
Sources said Sahil’s activities were captured on CCTV in the examination hall between around 12:30 pm and 12:45 pm on the day of the incident. With around 15 minutes remaining before the examination ended, the footage allegedly shows Sahil bending down to look at something kept in his pocket. A professor then questions him and takes him separately to one side, away from the other students.
After leaving the examination hall, Sahil is seen walking through the campus. At around 1:25 pm, CCTV footage reportedly captures him entering his hostel room. According to sources, Sahil did not come out of the room after that.
Later, information about Sahil’s death emerged from his room. The Crime Branch is now attempting to connect CCTV footage from the examination hall, campus and hostel to establish the complete sequence of events.
On Monday, September 21, major action was also taken at IIT Bombay in connection with the student’s suicide case. Professor Suryanarayana Doolla was removed from the post of Dean of Student Affairs. Based on a complaint filed by Sahil Wakode’s father, Mumbai Police also registered an FIR against IIT Bombay professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who had served as an invigilator during the examination.
The CCTV investigation and the administrative and police actions that followed Sahil Wakode’s death have brought the sequence of events surrounding the case into sharper focus.
