Mumbai Police registered an FIR against IIT Bombay professor Suryanarayan Dulla based on a complaint filed by Sahil Wakode’s father. The complaint contains serious allegations against the professor. According to the complaint, Sahil had allegedly been facing harassment for the past few months. His father also alleged that Professor Dulla had allegedly used caste-based slurs against the student.
The allegations remain under investigation, and police have not treated them as proven. The investigation has now been transferred to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which will examine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and the allegations raised by his family.
Amid the allegations, the IIT Bombay Faculty Forum issued a statement in support of Professor Suryanarayan Dulla. The forum said that the professor was carrying out his responsibilities during the examination in accordance with institutional rules.
According to the faculty forum, Dulla found the student in possession of and using a smartphone during the examination without permission. The forum described the incident as “academic malpractice” and expressed solidarity with the professor while also conveying condolences to the student’s family.
According to IIT Bombay, Sahil Wakode was a student in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering. The institute had earlier stated that he was found using a mobile phone inside the examination hall during a mid-semester examination.
The institute also stated that the student had attempted to upload the examination question paper to ChatGPT to obtain answers. IIT Bombay further said that no disciplinary action had been initiated against the student at that time.
According to the faculty forum, Professor Dulla was the instructor for the concerned course and was invigilating the mid-semester examination held from 11 am to 1 pm on September 18. During the examination, he allegedly saw the student using a smartphone without permission.
The allegations against Professor Dulla and the circumstances surrounding Sahil Wakode’s death remain under investigation. The claims will be subject to verification as the Mumbai Police Crime Branch proceeds with its inquiry.
