Delhi May Finally Get Monsoon Relief by July 4 After Prolonged Heatwave and Rain Deficit

According to private weather forecasting agency Skymet, the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Delhi by July 4 if current weather conditions remain favourable. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also stated that atmospheric conditions are conducive for the monsoon to advance into northern India over the next five to six days. After weeks of severe heat and a delayed southwest monsoon, Delhi and several parts of northern India are finally expected to experience relief.

The IMD said the monsoon is likely to advance further into the northern Arabian Sea, additional parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next two to three days. However, heatwave conditions may continue to persist in some areas of Uttar Pradesh during this period.

Skymet attributed the delayed arrival of the monsoon to the interaction between dry westerly winds originating from Pakistan and moisture-laden southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea. This weather pattern has increased both temperatures and humidity levels but has failed to generate widespread rainfall across the region.

Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet, said the monsoon usually reaches Delhi around June 27 or June 28. This year, however, its arrival is expected to be delayed by nearly a week. He explained that Delhi is currently experiencing a combination of dry and moisture-bearing winds, resulting in cloud formation without sufficient atmospheric moisture required for widespread rainfall.

The weather pattern has also created a noticeable difference between the recorded air temperature and the real-feel temperature. Cloud formation has generally occurred during the afternoon, after the day's maximum temperature has already been recorded. As a result, both the actual temperature and the perceived temperature have remained unusually high, intensifying the impact of the prolonged heatwave.

With weather agencies forecasting favourable conditions for the monsoon's advance, residents of Delhi-NCR are now looking toward early July with hopes of relief from one of the most uncomfortable June weather spells in recent years.
