Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Slovakia marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister since 1993. India and Slovakia elevate ties to a Comprehensive Partnership, expanding cooperation in defence, trade, technology, nuclear energy, and mobility while reinforcing global coordination and UN reforms.
Addressing the joint press statement in Bratislava during his state visit, Prime Minister Modi expressed his satisfaction that the Slovak leader had publicly accepted the invitation, which he stated was extended on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians.
“On behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, I invite you to visit India, and I am delighted that you have publicly accepted this invitation,” Prime Minister Modi said.
The state visit, held from June 14 to June 16 at the invitation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993, underscoring a historic breakthrough in bilateral engagement.
During extensive discussions, both leaders reviewed the full spectrum of India–Slovakia relations and identified new avenues of cooperation across trade and investment, defence and security, technology and innovation, space, nuclear energy, education and culture, talent mobility, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that both sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the need for comprehensive reform of the United Nations. The two leaders reiterated convergence on key international issues and emphasized that all disputes and tensions must be resolved through peaceful means.
Prime Minister Modi noted that India and Slovakia are advancing in close coordination on global platforms and highlighted the shared vision guiding bilateral engagement.
In a major diplomatic outcome, both sides formally agreed to elevate India–Slovakia relations to a Comprehensive Partnership, reflecting increased strategic convergence, mutual trust, and shared priorities.
Leaders also acknowledged the potential impact of the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement in enhancing trade flows, manufacturing linkages, investment opportunities, and employment generation, particularly for young populations in both regions.
The discussions resulted in multiple agreements and understandings across emerging and strategic sectors, including digital technologies, defence cooperation, cybersecurity, post-quantum technologies, audio-visual production, mobility frameworks, scientific collaboration, and nuclear energy cooperation.
Further strengthening bilateral connectivity, both countries announced progress on a labour migration agreement aimed at facilitating the movement of skilled professionals, alongside plans to conclude a social security agreement in the near future.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome from Prime Minister Robert Fico at the historic Bratislava Castle, where he was accorded an official reception ahead of detailed bilateral consultations focused on expanding strategic cooperation.
The Ministry of External Affairs, in a post on X, stated that the discussions aimed at deepening cooperation across diverse sectors and reinforcing shared priorities between the two nations.
The visit stands as a defining moment in India–Slovakia relations, establishing a structured framework for long-term strategic, economic, and technological partnership.
