India Finalises Representatives for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s State Funeral as Prime Minister Narendra Modi Skips Ceremony Due to Overseas Visit
India has announced that Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita will represent the country at former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's state funeral after Prime Minister Narendra Modi was unable to attend due to a pre-scheduled overseas visit.
In the Prime Minister's absence, India has nominated Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita to represent the country at the official ceremonies.
The state funeral programmes honouring Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will begin on July 4 and continue for five days. According to Iranian media, condolence ceremonies will be held on July 4 and July 5 at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla Prayer Hall in Tehran. Funeral processions will then take place on July 6 and July 7 in Tehran and the religious city of Qom.
The final ceremony is scheduled for July 9 in the holy city of Mashhad, where Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried within the shrine complex of Imam Reza, revered by Shia Muslims as the Eighth Imam.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported to have died on February 28 in Tehran during a joint United States and Israeli airstrike. His funeral was delayed for nearly 116 days due to escalating regional tensions and conditions resembling wartime. The state funeral will now take place after months of uncertainty.
Khamenei served as Iran's Supreme Leader for approximately 36 years. Following his death at the age of 86, the country witnessed a major political transition. In March, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was selected as Iran's new Supreme Leader.
India's participation in the funeral comes at a strategically significant moment in bilateral relations. India and Iran have maintained long-standing cooperation in areas including energy, trade, and regional security, making the country's representation at the ceremony diplomatically important.
Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain brings considerable strategic experience to the delegation, having served in senior military leadership positions before assuming office as the Governor of Bihar. Pabitra Margherita currently serves as Minister of State for External Affairs and is closely associated with India's diplomatic engagements.
The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei marked one of the most significant political developments in Iran's 46-year-old Shia theocratic system. Throughout his leadership, he played a defining role in shaping Iran's foreign policy, its opposition to the United States, and the broader political landscape of West Asia.
Following the reported joint United States-Israeli airstrike, Iran launched retaliatory action, further intensifying tensions across the Middle East. The state funeral is expected to attract representatives from several countries, placing global attention on the ceremonies and underscoring their diplomatic and geopolitical significance.
