Six Personnel Killed During Operation Sindoor to Be Honoured at National War Memorial
The Government has officially released the names of six Indian Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives during Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack. Their names will be permanently inscribed at the National War Memorial, honouring their sacrifice and preserving their legacy in the nation's military history.
The fallen personnel include five soldiers of the Indian Army and one member of the Indian Air Force. They have been identified as Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, Rifleman Sunil Kumar, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, Agniveer Murali Naik, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh, and Indian Air Force Sergeant Surendra Kumar. Their names have been released alongside the list of all military personnel who laid down their lives during various military operations in 2025.
The names of the six personnel will be permanently inscribed at the National War Memorial, where they will become part of the Circle of Sacrifice. The Circle of Sacrifice consists of 16 circular granite walls dedicated to the nation's military personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice since India's Independence. The name, rank, and unit of every soldier who died in the line of duty after Independence are engraved on the granite blocks that form these memorial walls.
Operation Sindoor was launched by India on May 7 last year in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people. During the operation, India carried out strikes on what it described as terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Pakistan responded immediately, leading to aerial engagements, drone attacks, and intense cross-border shelling.
The military operation was given the name "Operation Sindoor" to convey symbolic significance. The name referred to the traditional red vermilion worn by married Hindu women and was intended to represent vengeance for the women who were widowed after their husbands were killed in the terrorist attack.
The military confrontation between India and Pakistan continued for four days before coming to an end on May 10. With the official release of their names, the six personnel who lost their lives during Operation Sindoor will now be permanently remembered at the National War Memorial, ensuring that their sacrifice remains an enduring part of the nation's military history.
