Venezuela Thanks PM Modi for Support After Deadly Earthquakes Kill Over 160
Venezuela has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his condolences and offer of assistance after two powerful earthquakes killed more than 160 people and injured hundreds. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez praised India’s solidarity as rescue operations continue amid widespread destruction, a national emergency, and growing international humanitarian support.
The twin earthquakes, including a 7.5-magnitude tremor that struck just 40 seconds after a 7.2-magnitude foreshock, have claimed more than 160 lives and injured hundreds of people. According to CNN, the death toll is expected to rise further after what has been described as Venezuela’s strongest earthquake in more than a century.
Responding to Prime Minister Modi’s message on X, Rodriguez said Venezuela welcomed India’s support and solidarity during the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
“We warmly welcome the remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed his condolences and the Republic of India’s willingness to support relief efforts in the wake of the severe consequences of the earthquakes that struck our country,” Rodriguez said.
Emphasizing the strong relationship between the two nations, she stated that India’s gesture reflected the longstanding spirit of cooperation shared by the people of Venezuela and India during times of hardship.
“The solidarity expressed by India is in keeping with the spirit of cooperation between our peoples in times of difficulty. We acknowledge these expressions of international support and are grateful for the expressions of solidarity we have received,” Rodriguez added.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his deep sorrow over the destruction caused by the earthquakes and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
“Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the severe earthquakes in Venezuela,” he wrote on X.
“On behalf of the people of India, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially to the families who have lost their loved ones. We pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and stand in solidarity with all those affected during this difficult time. India stands ready to extend all possible assistance,” he added.
According to data from the United States Geological Survey, the back-to-back earthquakes caused extensive structural damage and led to the collapse of several buildings across affected regions. In response to the disaster, Acting President Rodriguez declared a nationwide state of emergency as authorities and emergency teams launched large-scale rescue and relief operations.
The catastrophe prompted an immediate international response. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed heartfelt solidarity with Venezuela, stating that Italian authorities were closely monitoring developments with deep concern and were working to activate all available channels of humanitarian assistance.
United States President Donald Trump also offered immediate support to Venezuela following the disaster. In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the earthquakes had caused a devastating loss of life and confirmed that he had directed United States agencies to prepare for the rapid deployment of aid if required.
Venezuela subsequently thanked the Trump administration for its support and solidarity. Rodriguez noted that Washington had remained in constant contact with Venezuelan authorities throughout the unfolding crisis.
As rescue teams continue searching through damaged areas and relief efforts intensify nationwide, the disaster has drawn a significant wave of international solidarity. Messages of support and offers of assistance from global leaders underscore the scale of the tragedy and the urgent humanitarian challenges facing Venezuela in the aftermath of its deadliest earthquake disaster in more than a century.
