The deceased, identified as Mayank Lohar, a resident of Virar, was attacked on the evening of June 23 while travelling on a Churchgate-Nallasopara local train. According to the details available, the incident occurred between Andheri and Borivali stations when an argument reportedly broke out near the train door.
During the altercation, the accused, identified as 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna, allegedly stabbed Lohar multiple times in the chest and abdomen. The severe injuries proved fatal. After carrying out the attack, Suvarna reportedly fled the train upon reaching Borivali station.
Law enforcement authorities launched an extensive search operation immediately after the incident. Investigators examined footage from more than 400 closed-circuit television cameras and tracked the suspect's mobile phone location. The efforts led to Suvarna's arrest within hours near Panvel.
The killing left Lohar's family devastated. Outside the hospital, grieving relatives demanded the death penalty for the accused. Lohar's family, long-time residents of Mumbai originally from Nepal, expressed profound anguish over the loss. His mother broke down in grief, lamenting that her son had not even eaten before the tragic incident claimed his life.
The case has intensified concerns regarding security on Mumbai's heavily crowded local trains. The fatal stabbing has sparked calls for stronger safety measures, including increased deployment of security personnel and stricter checks to prevent passengers from carrying knives and other dangerous weapons aboard trains.
The incident stands as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by millions of daily commuters on Mumbai's suburban railway system, reigniting demands for enhanced passenger protection and more effective security enforcement across the network.
