Muharram Processions Under Tight Security Across India as Authorities Intensify Vigil Ahead of Ashura
India has intensified security arrangements ahead of Muharram and Ashura processions, with Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and other states deploying additional police forces, drones, surveillance systems, traffic controls, and peace committee coordination to ensure peaceful observance.
In the national capital, Delhi Police has been placed on high alert for the Tazia processions scheduled on June 26. Additional police forces, barricading, and advanced monitoring systems have been deployed in several areas, particularly in North-East Delhi and Old Delhi, where large processions are traditionally held.
According to official information, North-East Delhi Police will deploy more than 1,100 local police personnel during the Ashura procession and has requested 20 companies of security forces from Police Headquarters. The district is considered highly sensitive, prompting authorities to implement extensive security measures.
North-East Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Alwal said that 14 drones would be used to monitor crowds, while facial recognition technology would be deployed to track criminal elements. To ensure the smooth conduct of the procession, police officials held 21 meetings at levels ranging from Police Station officers to the Deputy Commissioner of Police with peace committees, community harmony groups, cable operators, and prominent local residents.
Security has also been tightened across Uttar Pradesh for Muharram and Ashura observances. Flag marches are being conducted throughout the state, while additional forces have been deployed in sensitive districts. Special surveillance, barricading, and coordination meetings with peace committees are being carried out in major cities, including Lucknow. Following patterns seen in previous years, Provincial Armed Constabulary companies and central security forces are expected to be utilized. The government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued strict instructions to maintain law and order.
In Jharkhand, including East Singhbhum district and Jamshedpur, authorities have established extensive security arrangements. Drone surveillance, closed-circuit television monitoring, and flag marches are being used to maintain vigilance. Additional police personnel and executive magistrates have been deployed in sensitive areas. Ranchi has also been placed on high alert, with strict monitoring along procession routes.
Authorities in Bihar have directed all districts to strengthen security, regulate procession licensing, monitor social media activity, and promote communal harmony. Traffic diversion plans and road closure advisories have been issued in districts such as Purnia, while processions are being conducted under enhanced security arrangements in Khagaria.
In Telangana, preparations are underway for the historic Bibi Ka Alam procession in Hyderabad. The city’s Police Commissioner visited several Ashur Khanas and reviewed arrangements during a trial run involving the ceremonial elephant. Officials assessed security, traffic management, and civic facilities, including water supply, electricity, healthcare services, and sanitation. Coordination has been established with Shia organizations to ensure smooth conduct of the procession.
In Jammu and Kashmir, senior police officials have outlined comprehensive security arrangements for Muharram processions. Paramilitary forces, police units, mobile bunkers, and bulletproof vehicles have been deployed. Srinagar has also been placed under heightened security surveillance.
In Rajasthan, Tazia processions, including traditional processions featuring elephants in Jaipur, are being organized under police supervision. Authorities have implemented routine security measures, barricading, surveillance systems, and meetings with peace committees in major cities.
In Madhya Pradesh, authorities are maintaining enhanced vigilance in sensitive areas. Security planning includes crowd management and route regulation measures similar to those implemented in previous years in cities such as Ujjain.
Across other states, including Maharashtra and Karnataka, local police administrations, executive magistrates, and peace committees are coordinating security arrangements. Greater attention remains focused on major centers such as Hyderabad and Lucknow. Nationwide measures include social media monitoring, traffic advisories, surveillance operations, and community outreach initiatives aimed at maintaining peace and public order.
Ashura, observed on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is marked by processions held in memory of Imam Hussain. In 680 CE, Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his close companions were martyred in Karbala, Iraq, on this day. As millions prepare to commemorate the historic sacrifice, authorities across India have mounted one of the most extensive security operations of the year to ensure that observances take place peacefully and without disruption.
